IV INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE
ON THE HOLY SPIRIT

California has been and still is the one place in the world where the devotion to the Holy Ghost has experienced its largest expansion.The devotion and celebration in honor of the Holy Spirit is the largest, most visible and important religious and cultural manifestation of the Portuguese in California. For over 150 years, starting with the early shore whalers, the Portuguese have celebrated the Festa ao Divino Espirito Santo. Through good and bad times, in war and in peace, the Portuguese community of California has never forsaken these yearly celebrations to the Holy Spirit. This year, in almost 100 locations, more than a quarter million people — officers, queens, members, volunteers, donors and guests — will experience the sharing and family atmosphere of these unique celebrations brought over by our pioneers from the Azores.

After being held twice in Brazil, this International Conference was held in Terceira, Azores, two years ago. Since its inception, this Conference is intended to be: 1. A forum where experts and interested people have the opportunity to share their knowledge on the subject; 2. A platform for the representatives of the Holy Ghost societies to share the history and evolution of the present day celebrations in honor of the Holy Spirit; 3. A showcase for the visiting participants to witness and experience the events of a Holy Ghost festa.

Starting on June 24, 2010, the Portuguese community of California is hosting the IV International Conference on the Holy Spirit, an exceptional opportunity to showcase these with our brethren from across the US (California, Hawaii, Nevada, Colorado, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Idaho), Canada, Brazil, Bermuda, Azores and other areas where these festas, now in its many variations, still take place. This four-day conference will provide participants with a unique blend of academic reflection and practical experience, including the preparation for and the incorporation in the many events of an actual and typical California Holy Ghost festa, the I.E.S. (Irmandade do Espírito Santo) of San Jose celebration.

The choice of hosting the Conference in the San Jose area is only justified by its centrality, easy access to international airports, and for the large number of community association facilities available and that can be a great asset in assisting the organizing committee to make possible all the planned activities.

An event of such magnitude and prestige can only be successfully accomplished with the expanded and unconditional support of the Holy Ghost societies and of the Portuguese-American community of California. We thank all the community organizations and the sponsors for their support and for helping us make this event a reality.

Although this Conference enjoys the sponsorship and support of the Direcção Regional das Comunidades, Azores, the responsibility for the organization of the event, including all of its financial aspects, rests with the Organizing Committee and associated Portuguese community organizations in California.

IV CONGRESSO INTERNACIONAL
SOBRE AS FESTAS DO DIVINO ESPÍRITO SANTO

A Califórnia foi e é o local privilegiado onde a tradição, o culto e a devoção ao Divino Espírito Santo, trazida pelos emigrantes dos Açores, teve a sua maior divulgação e expansão no mundo, tornando-se assim a nota cultural mais marcante deste povo na sua terra de adopção.

Depois de se ter realizado duas vezes no Brasil, esta Conferência bienal teve lugar há dois anos na ilha Terceira, Açores. Estes encontros têm como propósitos: 1. aprofundar os conhecimentos dos interessados neste vasto movimento do culto ao Espírito Santo, contando por isso, com a participação de peritos e estudiosos sobre o assunto; 2. Oferecer uma ocasião privilegiada para os representantes de organizações do E.S. partilharem as suas experiências e a evolução das celebrações locais através dos tempos; 3. Proporcionar à comunidade local a oportunidade de dar a conhecer aos participantes–visitantes as diversas manifestações associadas às celebrações, através da participação numa festa típica em honra ao Espírito Santo, neste caso, a celebração da festa promovida pela Irmandade do Espírito Santo (I.E.S) de S. José.

A escolha da área San José–Santa Clara justifica-se na medida em que reúne uma série de condições logísticas ideais que facilitam a tarefa do grupo organizador, como o acesso fácil a aeroportos internacionais, um vasto número de associações comunitárias que poderão servir de apoio a alguns dos eventos e responsabilidades, bem como uma rede de infra-estruturas físicas que dificilmente se encontram em outro sítio.

Uma iniciativa de tanta abrangência e prestígio exigirá, sem dúvida, um envolvimento comunitário muito alargado. O Comité organizador manifesta desde já o seu profundo agradecimento por toda a colaboração e apoios recebidos das irmandades do Espírito Santo da Califórnia e muitas outras associações comunitárias que já aderiram a este projecto.

Sendo a primeira vez que este Congresso terá lugar na América do Norte, pretende-se estender a participação a representações dos Açores e do Brasil, bem como às comunidades e irmandades do Espírito Santo do Canadá, Bermuda, Costa Leste dos EUA, Nevada, Utah, Colorado e Hawaii.

Este Congresso Internacional tem a chancela e apoio da Direcção Regional das Comunidades dos Açores, mas é na organização local que recai a responsabilidade da organização e sustentabilidade do mesmo.
