5 Questions - A short interview with newly elected California State Assemblyman David Valadão

1. Who is David Valadão? Where were you born and raised? What is your background?

I'm the son of Portuguese emigrants. I was born in Hanford, California. I live, went to school, and built my business in the 30th District. My family and I are partners in two dairies in the San Joaquin Valley. I am married to my High School sweetheart and have three children.

2. Why did you want to run for political office?

After getting involved with a few Dairy advocacy groups, I had the opportunity to spend some time in Sacramento and Washington DC. I quickly realized the need for real business experience in government. My experience running a business and dealing with the regulatory burden of state government led me to run for the California Assembly.

3. How did it feel to win the November 2 election for the State Assembly?

It felt great. I worked hard and stuck to my principals. To have so many voters check the box next to my name is an honor and a privilege that I take very seriously. I have worked alongside the people of the 30th District and I share their values.

4. What will be the first thing you'll do in Sacramento?

I will work to educate my colleagues from northern and southern California about my district. I will also make every effort to learn about where they come from. I feel that the more questions I ask, the more common ground I can find. Californians want jobs and they expect their legislators to work together to fix our state.

5. What are your top priorities in Sacramento? I will work to bring desperately needed water back to our farmers and communities in the 30th Assembly District. I will also bring a common sense perspective to the regulatory process. If we want to attract jobs to our state we need to create a more friendly business environment. Finally, I look forward to working with my fellow legislators to find solutions to California's huge budget deficit. The Portuguese Tribune will continue to follow Assemblyman Valadão's steps in Sacramento.
